Fashion

İstanbul Fashion Week

Istanbul’s biggest fashion event, “Istanbul Fashion Week” (IFW), will be organized from Aug. 25-28 for the third time. I believe that IFW will have a greater impact this year internationally as Istanbul is the 2010 European Capital of Culture.

IFW is organized by the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporter Associations (ITKIB), with the support of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency and with the cooperation of the Fashion Designers Association (MTD) and the United Brands Association (BMD). The first of the fashion weeks was organized in August 2009 and was called “Istanbul Fashion Days.” Approximately 25,000 people visited the event in three days.

IFW aims to unite fashion in Turkey under a single roof by bringing together the leading fashion designers of our country and ready-to-wear brands. It is an enormous fashion event that consists of fashion shows, events and after parties.

I believe Istanbul will soon become a fashion capital of the world, in the same league as the big four -- Paris, New York, Milan and London.

Celebs Wear Turkish Designers!

Rachel Bilson Wears Hakan Yıldırım in InStyle UK September Issue

Rachel Bilson is the cover girl for the September issue of InStyle UK. The 28-year-old actress, who I remember vividly from her OC days as Summer, wears Hakaan’s  “fall 2010 -- sculpted skirt” in the issue. This dress was a runway piece during his show at London Fashion Week.

Victoria Beckham Graces August Turkish Vogue Cover Wearing Yıldrım Mayruk

Victoria Beckham has landed her fifth Vogue cover -- this time for the Turkish edition. Fashionista Beckham poses provocatively on the cover wearing a black mini dress from Yıldırım Mayruk. She also wears Dilek Hanif, Zeynep Tosun, Arzu Kaprol and Hakaan.

Brooke Shields wore a white Simay Bülbül piece at the premiere of “The Other Guys” in NYC at the Ziegfeld Theatre on August 2. She donned a white coctail dress with detailing on the bottom together with white sandals and jewelry.

Burberry’s New Makeup Line

Until now, fragrances were our only Burberry beauty option, but today, we can get our makeup from Burberry. Burberry is about to expand its empire by branching into makeup. This month it launched its make-up line, a 96-piece collection. The collection includes sheer foundation, blush, pressed powder, bronzer, liquid foundation, eye shadow, eyeliner, lip gloss, lipstick and mascara, each with the packaging etched in the signature check design. We may now match our foundation with our iconic trench. My favorite is "Burberry beauty lip cover soft satin lipstick." Unfortunately, the collection is not available in Turkey yet.

A Serious Man

“A Serious Man” is a 2009 black comedy film written, produced and directed by the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen. The film stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Sari Lennick, Fred Melamed, Richard Kind and Amy Landecker and tells the story of an ordinary man who has to cope with undeserved trials that challenge his acceptance of an orderly universe overseen by an attentive deity.

The film has won critical acclaim, and Michael Stuhlbarg was nominated for a Golden Globe. Among other awards, it had a place on both the American Film Institute and National Board of Review's top 10 film lists of 2009 and was nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. The film's soundtrack was composed by Carter Burwell, who has composed the music for all the Coens' movies so far.

The film was listed as one of the “hit films” of the IF Film Festival organized last February. It opened in Turkey on August 6 and will be shown for another couple of weeks. Don’t miss it!

Music

Suat Ateşdağlı’s New Albums

Suat Ateşdağlı is one of the first names that comes to mind when one talks about music and nightlife in Turkey. He has played as a DJ for several night clubs in Istanbul including Reina and Blackk. Ateşdağlı has received many awards for his music including the “DJ of the Year Award” given by gecce.com every year for the last four years. He has worked with many Turkish musicians and singers including Nilüfer, Demet Akalın, Hadise, Ajda and Tarkan.

In the same vein as his previous work “Bosphorus Night,” Ateşdağlı’s new records “Blackk” and “Reina” combine elements of electronic, pop and Latin and Turkish music and transform them into 60 minutes of hip-shaking tunes, which is his specialty. The records are meant to be enjoyed and danced to during the summer months.

What Is New In The City

Restaurant

Last Sunday I had lunch with caricaturist Gökçen Eke at Food&Co, a new restaurant that opened three months ago on Bagdat Street. The decoration of Food&Co is quite modern; I really liked the zebra-patterned bar and ceiling lamps. Tables are not too close together, so you have enough space while you eat. The background music is not loud, and you are able to hear your dining companions speak, which was essential for us. They also have two gardens. The kitchen is partially open, so you can see the chef cooking. Food&Co mainly serves modern European food. However, it also has some Turkish specialities, such as kebap with yogurt, on the menu. The menu includes salads (TL 14-23), cold and warm starters and tapas (TL 7-21), wraps, burgers and sandwiches (TL 15-20), pizzas and pastas (TL 16-24), main courses (TL 24-28), fried dishes (TL 22-27) and a children’s menu (TL 10-15). They also have a diet menu showing the calories of each dish (TL 10-15). The diet menu includes detox beverages that will help you burn calories. In addition to all these, Food&Co serves four different special recipes of four famous international chefs within the context of the "art of eating and drinking." What did we eat? I had a grilled zucchini and cheese salad. Eke ordered a seafood salad called "Brazilian." For dessert, I had mini souffles, and Eke ordered profiterolles.

Food was delicious, service was fast, and people were friendly. They did not charge me extra when I spilled my iced tea all over the place. If you are bored of eating at the same places on Bagdat Street and want to try something new, I suggest going to Food&Co.
